The components of the project

The stories proposed are original texts available for publication and production. Stories, testimonies and personal newspapers are only allowed if they tell a story, in dramatic form, as a novel, comic, play, script... etc.

Title

Mandatory, the title of the story must be sufficiently significant. It can question, be humorous, intriguing, or use a common term. Focus on simplicity. A single word is often enough, a sentence is rarer but may surprise.

Picture

Obligatory, the pcture represents the physical and psychological universe in which the history takes place. It is intended to create interest in the text. Its format is that of a movie poster (retailed at a width of 300 pixels and a height of 400 pixels, less than 1MB). It must be free of law. No text is included except for illustration purposes. The representative picture is obviously fundamental for a comic book or an album.

Pitch

Obligatory, the pitch (or hook) is a presentation of the story, in a few words, encouraging the reader to discover the text. This is the paragraph usually found in programs or lists (the Showcase). It must be worked with care because it is the gateway to the text. If you cannot summarize your story in one or two sentences, it is because its subject is not clear enough. Specify it !

Synopsis

Obligatory, the synopsis is a presentation of the story in a few pages. It contains the structure, the plot, the atmosphere and the spirit of the final text. He explains the plot, summarizing the action succinctly, without dialogue. The main characters appear with their characters and the dramaturgy is easily understood. The themes and questions addressed by the project are presented unambiguously. A good synopsis is therefore not written in five minutes. It is often easier to write it after the first version of the text.

Statement of intent

Obligatory, the statement of intent is a personal text where the author expresses his sensitivity. It’s all about convincing a professional to invest in the project and not expressing a general idea with friends. Thus, this note is similar to a detailed “back cover” where the author explains why he proposes this story and not another. The reader of the note must understand all the potential outlined by the synopsis : the interest of the characters and the situations, the resonance with the actuality, the universality of the theme or the originality of the problem…

In this note, the author specifies his intentions and therefore his choices: Why history takes place at this time, in this country, on this planet… Why the film is silent, black and white… Why the novel is epistolary, anti-chronological… Why the game takes place in this building, this decor… etc. The author must prove the interest of the story he proposes, the originality of his point of view and the impact it could have on the public.

Professionals attach great importance to this document. They particularly appreciate the fact that the project remains open, that is to say able to accommodate modifications and teamwork. So avoid overemphasizing yourself, being obtuse or demanding, taking yourself for a psychoanalyst (even if you are one), and be humble in your expressions. Don’t be too succinct or too talkative (two pages maximum) and don’t tell your life story, only the project counts.

The note format is a PDF file to attach to the synopsis (less than 1MB).

Link to a web page

Optional, the link provides access to an extract or to the entire text. It can be an appendix publication by the author (Amazon, Calameo, Wattpad, Youscribe...) or a file (ebook or PDF) on a more complete personal site. Be careful to protect the copy text if it is directly downloadable.

For more information on writing these items and their formats, see the Friends page.
